Spring 2024

2023 Mauritson Sauvignon Blanc, Dry Creek Valley

The Mauritson Dry Creek Valley Sauvignon Blanc exemplifies our core philosophy: Great wine is made in the vineyard! This single vineyard release sees minimal oak and doesn’t go through malolactic fermentation. It’s truly one of the purest expressions of Sauvignon Blanc you will find in California.

Our 2023 vintage is sourced entirely from our Hardie Ranch. Planted more than two decades ago, it’s located in the northern part of the valley, along the banks of Dry Creek, where the soil is gravelly and deep, allowing for great water drainage and root penetration. Harvesting this vineyard multiple times allows us to create blending options by capturing different aromatic and flavor profiles, as does fermenting and aging in stainless steel and large-format wood vessels versus small-format barrels. Each decision is driven by our goal to achieve maximum depth and complexity. A return to cooler than average summer temperatures and a subsequent later harvest date also helped imbue the Sauvignon Blanc with incredible freshness and energy.

On the nose, enticing perfumed aromas include candied lime, white hyacinth blossom and wet stone, with a beautiful underlying pulse of gala melon flesh and white pineapple. The entry is lovely and very inviting. On the palate, cleansing Bergamot orange zest gives the wine focus, while a kiss of summer ripened Mirabelle plum carries the round and refreshing lift on the finish.

2023 Mauritson Rose, Sonoma County

Our 2023 Rosé was made by whole-cluster pressing 100 percent Zinfandel, a practice that produces lightly pigmented and delicate wines. The Rosé juice was also fermented entirely in stainless steel and has not gone through malolactic fermentation, preserving the bright, cleansing, natural malic acid in the grapes.

This elegant Rosé has a light rose-copper tint with scents of wild strawberry, dried chamomile blossom, bosc pear and crushed chalk, punctuated by traces of morning alyssum blossom. Bone dry, the fleshy core of delicate red fruits is balanced by racy acidity. Enjoy this energetic Rosé over the next 12-18 months with lighter fare or while enjoying a picnic with family and friends!

2022 Rockpile "Buck Pasture" Red Wine

59% Cabernet Sauvignon 14% Petit Verdot 12% Merlot 9% Malbec 6% Cabernet Franc

The 2022 growing season proved itself challenging with the lack of rainfall and above average growing temperatures. We made each farming through the lens of maintaining vine stamina for the big push at the tail end of the growing season. We also did less leaf plucking to encourage a greater degree of dappled sunlight impacting the grapes via less leaf plucking, preserving freshness and detail in the grapes. Our experience growing on the ridgelines of Rockpile continues to prove to us that mother nature delivers weather events there that magnify the valley floor experiences, so having a keen eye for detail and a devotion for preparation helps us to buffer any extremes.

This multi-layered Bordeaux blend walks a fine line between the expected ripeness of a dry, warm growing season and the freshness that is the hallmark of our wines. Intriguing aromas of red cassis, licorice, cured meats, dried lavender, cigar wrapper and shavings of dark cacao are prominent. While it’s generous on the palate, both in its fruit layers and richness, this wine ultimately represents a rare glimpse into the softer side of Rockpile, and should be cherished over the next 2 to 12 years.
