2014 Rockpile Malbec
Buck Pasture Vineyard
20 months in oak barrels, 100% French
The 2014 vintage tops off a three-year string of impeccable growing conditions. This wine is firing on all cylinders. Aromas of candied-blackberry, dried wild herbs and sweet baking spices waft from the glass. On the entry the wine is round and full, yet it retains its balance, showing a measure of finesse through the finish. Anise, espresso grounds and black cherry coat the palate in glorious fashion. The tannins are velvety but still have enough weight to sustain 8+ years of aging.
Back in the old days when you wanted to find a big buck, you went to the area of the ranch called the Buck Pasture. These days, the Buck Pasture is home to some of our Bordeaux varieties: Malbec, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. With an elevation of nearly 1,100 feet, an average slope of 25 degrees and sweeping southwestern sun exposures, you could not ask for a better place to grow Malbec. Composed primarily of gravelly loam soils, there is very little water retention, which limits the vigor and yield of these vines.
