2014 Zinfandel, Westphall Ridge Vineyard
11 months in oak barrels, 100% French
The 2014 Westphall Ridge Zinfandel is incredibly expressive, flavors of Bing cherry, wild flowers, and mineral jump out of the glass. On the palate, flavors of crushed raspberry are complemented by nuances of roasted coffee and earthen spice. The entry is plush and inviting, yet this finishes with balance and grace. Please enjoy the 2014 Westphall Ridge Vineyard over the next 6-8 years, but it will benefit from an additional 6 months of cellaring.
The Westphall Ridge Vineyard is located at nearly 1,400 ft elevation in the Rockpile appellation which is the highest in elevation of all of our single vineyard wines. This vineyard is characterized by its western sun exposures, red volcanic soil and steep slope. The sun exposure provides phenolic maturity without overripe flavors. The soil composition and extreme slope are what really set this Zinfandel apart, continually yielding intense floral notes layered with an iron minerality.
I hate to sound like a broken record, but the 2014 Westphall Ridge Vineyard Zinfandel may be the best we have ever made from this vineyard. The reality is that when we look back in 25 years on the 2012-2014 vintages, it may go down in history as the best 3 year stretch California has ever seen.
