2015 Zinfandel, Westphall Ridge Vineyard
11 months in oak barrels 100% French
For our Rockpile Zinfandels, the 2015 harvest yields were down nearly 30-50% as a result of three plus years of severe drought in addition to very cool weather during bloom. This manifested itself in less clusters per vine and lighter cluster weights. Our 2015 Rockpile Zinfandels dance a fine line between elegance and the expected robustness that Rockpile always delivers. The 2015 Westphall Ridge Zinfandel opens to a beautiful combination of black raspberry, white magnolia blossom, and undertones of roasted coffee and cherry cola. On the palate, the entry is full of ripe strawberry flavors that precludes to crushed pomegranate seed and hints of mineral. The focus and brightness of this wine will allow you to enjoy over the next 5-7 years but it will greatly improve with 6-12 more months of cellar aging.
The Westphall Ridge Vineyard is located at nearly 1,400 ft elevation in the Rockpile appellation which is the highest in elevation of all of our single vineyard wines. This vineyard is characterized by its western sun exposures, red volcanic soil and steep slope. The sun exposure provides phenolic maturity without overripe flavors. The soil composition and extreme slope are what really set this Zinfandel apart, continually yielding intense floral notes layered with an iron minerality.
