2017 Zinfandel, Westphall Ridge Vineyard
96% Zinfandel 4% Petite Sirah
11 months in oak barrels 100% French
The 2017 vintage produced Zinfandels with perfumed fruit aromas and flavors and a level of showiness rare among Zinfandels made from our Rockpile vineyards. The 2017 Westphall Ridge Zinfandel has a beautiful deep magenta hue. Wonderfully fragrant fresh crushed briary black raspberry and blackberry explode from the glass, along with touches of Indian spices and dusty soil. This wine is full-bodied with great concentration and freshness. The long finish ends with a gracefully integrated kiss of sweet oak.
The Westphall Ridge Vineyard is located at nearly 1,400-feet in the Rockpile appellation, the highest in elevation of all our single vineyard sites. Its western sun exposure, red volcanic soil and steep slope provide the grapes grown here with phenolic maturity without overripe flavors. Intense floral notes and iron minerality are also part of the signature style of Westphall.
Relatively approachable now, it would benefit from at least 12 months of patient bottle aging to access some of its secondary and tertiary attributes. Please enjoy over the next 5-7 years.
