Every artisan has a project they return to after the workday is over. Our Reserve Zin is it for us. Sourced from our Buchignani, Saini, and Faloni vineyards, the exaggerated slopes and lack of water in these vineyards create extremely small berries with uncharacteristically thick skins. Each year we reserve the best lots from these vineyards for a final blend into our Reserve Wines. Sensing that these grapes could be even more than your typical knockout Dry Creek Zin, we extend the maceration and leave the resulting wine in barrels for an extremely long time – up to 30 months! Our resulting Reserve Zinfandel has the depth, structure, and balance normally reserved for a Bordeaux wine.

2004 Grower's Reserve Zinfandel
Dry Creek Valley
For those of you familiar with our Reserve Zinfandel, you understand what I mean when I say, “We take Zinfandel and make it like Cabernet.” The 2004 Growers Reserve optimizes that statement. Extended maceration, more than 2 years in French oak, hillside vineyards… sounds like a recipe for a great Cabernet, or in our case, a Zinfandel. The aromas of berry, earth, and the hints of oak are just a tease. Rich and firm in the front palate, yet restrained and elegant on the finish, this wine is the Jekyll and Hyde of Zinfandels. It retains all of the wonderful traits that make Zinfandel so spectacular: black fruit, minerals, spice… and… combines that with the best that Cabernet has to offer, broad tannins, complex fruit, and incredible aging ability. Take pleasure in the beautiful dichotomy of this wine. Drink it now or sometime in the next decade.
