2021 Rockpile Zinfandel, Far
Our 2021 Rockpile Får Zinfandel is only the second iteration of this exceptional mountain-grown Zinfandel. It takes its name from the Swedish word for sheep and pays homage to our family’s heritage as pioneering homesteaders originally from Stockholm, who raised merino sheep for the wool on land that’s now the heart of our vineyards in Rockpile.
The growing season for this vintage yielded Zinfandels with transcendent plushness and sophisticated character. The Får also has a complex aromatic profile reminiscent of dark fruit compote, savory dried herbs, crushed graphite and red earth mineral. The texture is seamless and accessible and the wine resolves perfectly, with a multi-layered and persistent finish of ripe red fruit, warm sweet spices and earth tones.
While 12 months of patient aging will reveal additional secondary and tertiary attributes, the juicy fruit can be appreciated now and throughout the next 5-7 years.
2021 Rockpile Cabernet Sauvignon
At the time of bud break in late March, we had only received about 20 percent of our annual rainfall, so many growers early on adjusted their farming practices accordingly. This meant dropping fruit earlier in the season to keep the vines strong through and refraining from aggressive fruit exposure.
Despite the drier growing season, the ripening period that falls between mid-August to late October was nearly flawless. Long warm Fall days meant picking decisions could be scheduled in the absence of haste. Grapes patiently hung on the vines, waiting to be harvested at their ultimate balance of flavor, freshness and intensity.
Our Rockpile Cabernet is beautifully detailed on the nose, with perfumed notes of black cherries, dried violets, loganberry, dusty iron red earth, shaved cocoa bean, woodsmoke, coastal dried underbrush and anise. Its vibrant and energetic entry leads to the expected full-bodied expression of a Rockpile Cabernet Sauvignon. This vintage is also defined by a delicious, sophisticated and tailored tannin profile, concluding in a superb multi-layered finish with a candied fruit element that’s seductive and even more rewarding with aeration. Enjoy it over the next 15+ years.
