Our family’s Rockpile Ridge Vineyard is located at nearly 1,200 feet in elevation. This vineyard has sweeping sun exposures from southeast to northwest and consists of nine distinctly different blocks of Zinfandel. Each are harvested at different times and fermented separately to ensure the integrity and uniqueness of the individual blocks. Working with the varied sun exposures, soil compositions, slopes and drainages is a winemaking dream come true and what makes our Rockpile Ridge Zinfandel so spectacular.
Our 2018 Rockpile Ridge Zinfandel carries all of the signature aromas expected from Zinfandel grown in Rockpile: candied red fruits; cocoa shavings with hints of dried flowers and herbs; leather and earthen dust. A smooth, inviting entry with black fruits retreats to mineral and sweet baking spices. That’s followed by a full-bodied, chewy texture with ripe tannins and great freshness, culminating in a long and layered finish. This energetic Zinfandel would benefit from at least 1-2 years of bottle age. Enjoy over the next 10-12 years.
Named after one of the area’s earliest settlers, the Jack’s Cabin site has quite a colorful history. Though Jack Ireland’s primary occupation was clearing land for sheep and cattle grazing, he was most known for his moonshine and disregard for the law, as apparently he spent many a night in the county jail. When my father, and grandfather before him, were growing up on the property, only the tattered remnants of Jack’s house remained. The old decrepit structure only strengthened the notion that the “cabin” was haunted, and thus was born the legend of Jack’s Cabin!
Planted at nearly 950 feet in elevation and roughly 15 degrees slope, Jack’s Cabin Vineyard is one of the premier sites of Rockpile. It has a southern sun exposure and is planted with the meandering natural slope of the bench. Relatively hidden from the coastal breezes that howl through Rockpile, this vineyard is the least stressed of all the blocks.
The 2018 Jack’s Cabin Zinfandel is very classic in its aromatic offerings: crushed black cherry, milk chocolate shavings, sweet baking spices and nuances of dried oldfashion rose petal. The juicy entry reveals fresh red currants and black raspberries, black tea leaf and dusty soil. Fullbodied with a plush texture, it finishes with great focus and clarity. Please enjoy over the next 5-7 years.
