The Pritchett Peaks are the mountains that form the eastern border of Lake Sonoma and are named after the Pritchett family, some of the earliest Rockpile area settlers.
This property borders our original 1868 homesteaded land and we first planted grapes here in 2008. Rising to approximately 1,250 feet in elevation, this vineyard is at the top of the Rockpile ridgeline and offers a completely different terroir than our other Rockpile Zinfandel sites. Because of its eastern sun exposure, this block only gets direct sunlight early in the morning, and its nearly 30- degree slope provides optimal drainage and wind exposure.
Our 2017 Pritchett Peaks Zinfandel is just starting to reveal its beautiful layers of aromas: fresh wild blackberries, perfumed black cherry and seductive toasted baking spices. Fresh black fruit and black tea leaf give way to firm and chewy tannins with traces of sweet earth and shaved cardamom. Powerful yet wonderfully balanced, this wine would greatly benefit from at least one additional year in the bottle. Enjoy it over the next 8-10 years.
Located at nearly 1,300 feet, at the top of the Rockpile ridgeline, Uncle’s Block is part of my family’s original homestead and is now owned by my uncle, Chris Mauritson. This vineyard is characterized by its eastern sun exposure, volcanic soil, steep slope and lack of water. We hand select the best rows from this incredible site for our small offerings of Uncle’s Block. This is one of the most stressed vineyards we farm at Rockpile, and that character is captured in the wine.
The 2017 Rockpile Zinfandel from Uncle’s Block has detailed aromas of black cherry compote, black raspberry preserves and chocolate cake crumbs with touches of sweet, fragrant earth. Dark, complex, and powerful, with briary bramble notes, this wine also has a dusting of savory roasted herbs that complements its full-bodied and serious nature. It’s exceptional and will drink beautifully over the next 8-10 years.
The 2017 vintage was defined by a very small crop and an abnormally high heat spike during the first week of September. As winemakers, this vintage truly tested the limits of our patience. It was easy to fall into the trap of picking based on what mother nature threw at us, but instead it underscored that wine grapevines are truly resilient plants. The resulting Rockpile Cabernet Sauvignon has a riper profile compared to years past, but still has every ounce of power expected from rugged Rockpile.
Our 2017 Rockpile Cabernet Sauvignon has beautiful, detailed aromas of black candied-fruit, sweet hummus and semi-sweet chocolate. Despite the very limited production, we hand-selected each barrel to tease out each nuance that our “spice rack” could offer. Balanced and seamless, this wine also has perfectly placed silky tannins. Please enjoy this incredible wine over the next 8+ years.
