Named after one of the area’s earliest settlers, the Jack’s Cabin site has quite a colorful history. Though Jack Ireland’s primary occupation was clearing land for sheep and cattle grazing, he was most known for his moonshine and disregard for the law. Apparently, he spent many a night in the county jail. When my father, and grandfather before him, were growing up on the property, only the tattered remnants of Jack’s house remained. The old decrepit structure only strengthened the notion that the “cabin” was haunted, and thus was born the legend of Jack’s Cabin!
Planted at nearly 950 feet in elevation and roughly 15 degrees slope, the Jack’s Cabin Vineyard is one of Rockpile’s premier sites. It has a southern sun exposure and is planted with the meandering natural slope of the bench. Relatively hidden from the coastal breezes that howl through Rockpile, this vineyard is the least stressed of all the blocks.
Our 2022 Jack’s Cabin Zinfandel is a delicious and complex wine. Its harmonious aromatics entice with ripe red fruits, warm, melted milk chocolate shavings, wild dried brush, mineral and glazed dark fruits. Dense and full-bodied, it has ample juicy red and dark fruits, with lingering tones of dried herbs and sweet earth. An almost chewy texture balances generous tannins and a long, fresh finish. Please enjoy over the next 6-9 years.
Our Grower’s Reserve Zinfandel celebrates the most exceptional fruit from the most distinctive vineyards in the Dry Creek Valley appellation. Incredible depth and concentration define the character of the 2022 vintage of this wine, the result of a warm growing season and a low crop yield.
It was also apparent very early on in the growing season that during the ripening stage of the grapes, the sugars could easily race away from us. This early recognition translated into a regimen of tighter intervals between vineyard visits and constant communication with our growers to capture that perfect timing for harvest decision. As a result, we were able to maintain terrific underlying freshness and create Zinfandels with lots of layered fruit.
This wine exudes the purity of the ideal essence of Zinfandel fruit, with aromas of crushed summer-ripened black raspberries and huckleberries, purple plum flesh and an underlining pulse of violet petal. Wonderful and lifted flavors of blackberry cobbler, shaved cocoa and dustings of espresso grounds frame the firm and youthful tannins. The finish is long and energetic. Enjoy for the next 7-10 years.
Our 2022 Mauritson Sonoma County Cabernet is a remarkable example of the art of blending to capture both a sense of place and time. All five traditional Bordeaux grapes have roles in showcasing the incredible diversity of fruit that northern Sonoma County has to offer, with each vineyard and varietal adding a nuance and layer to the final stunning wine.
Quite youthful and shy on the nose, this wine needs a light swirl in the glass or even a decanting to reveal its incredible depth and detail. Deep, dark ripe plum, cassis, mineral and a dusting of shaved vanilla bean pod, sassafras, earthen char, and dried underbrush waft from the glass. A beautiful freshness gives lift to the mid-palate while the lingering sweet dark fruit provides depth. Firm but graceful tannins linger on the palate. This Cabernet will age exquisitely for the next 10-plus years.
