2018 Rockpile "Madrone Spring"
58% Zinfandel 42% Petite Sirah
14 months in oak barrels 100% French
Our family’s Rockpile Ridge Vineyard is located at nearly 1,200 feet in elevation in the Rockpile appellation. The Madrone Spring block is composed of three distinct varieties: Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Syrah. These three varietals grow in the coolest microclimate in Rockpile due to its northwest orientation, thus producing wines of freshness and distinction. The blocks are harvested at different times and fermented separately to maintain the integrity and uniqueness of the individual blocks. Our intention was to create a blend that not only exemplifies this unique area of our original homesteaded property but also showcases the extraordinary affinity and alchemy of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Syrah.
Our Madrone Springs Red Wine has historically been a red wine blend dominated by Zinfandel and complimented with Petite Sirah and Syrah. Regardless of the varietal breakdown, our intention is to always make the best blend that represents the Madrone Spring Vineyard in that vintage-never formulaic. In 2018, we decided to leave out the Syrah and is it amazing how the additional Petite Sirah easily filled that void. A complex nose of candied summer blueberry, fragrant raspberry preserves, baker’s chocolate, and sweet dusty soil. Black fruit overlays the rich and spicy entry. Concentrated and full bodied with great freshness, this delicious red wine blend would benefit from at least 12 months of bottle age. Enjoy this wine over the next 10+ years.
