Production Notes
Flavors of currant, blackberry and dark chocolate jump out of the glass of the 2013 Rockpile Cabernet Sauvignon. Focused on the entry, the wine has great weight without being clumsy. Flavors of currant and plum give way to the subtler nuances of sweet oak and earthen spice. The tannins are fine grained, giving the wine a beautiful linear characteristic. Though it is enjoyable in its youth, the 2013 Rockpile Cabernet will be at its best from 2017-2030.
Winemaker Notes
In 25 years, when we look back on the 2012, 2013 and 2014 vintages, I believe it will go down in history as the greatest three-year stretch California has ever seen. It is nearly impossible to say one is better than another. A more accurate statement is that all three vintages are outstanding, yet showcase different nuances of the respective varietal. Being that the 2014s are still resting soundly in barrel, the current comparison is between the 2012s and 2013s. Both are truly exceptional, but the 2013s are showing greater focus and more intensity. The tannins are fine grained and the wines are more linear than their broad shouldered predecessor. With the rare blend of power and finesse, fruit and complexity, acid and texture -- this vintage has it all!
