2015 Zinfandel, Jack's Cabin Vineyard
15 months in oak barrels 100% French
The Jack’s Cabin Zinfandel has a reputation of being the most fruit-forward of the Rockpile Zins and the 2015 does not disappoint. Aromas of high-toned black cherry are overlaid with cocoa powder and sweet baking spices. The rich entry explodes with dried red fruit followed by hints of espresso grounds and graham cracker. Plush tannins overlay the incredible ripe and rich fruit that our Jack’s Cabin Zinfandel offers. The traditional Rockpile stamp of great balance and acidity still shines through, though, making it a great accompaniment to food. Enjoy this wine over the next 5-7 years.
Planted at nearly 950 feet in elevation, at roughly 10-15 degrees slope, the Jack’s Cabin Vineyard is one of the premier sites of Rockpile. It has a southern sun exposure and is planted with the meandering natural slope of the bench. Relatively hidden from the coastal breezes that howl through Rockpile, this vineyard is the least stressed of all the blocks.
Named after one of the area’s earliest settlers, the Jack’s Cabin site has quite a colorful history. Though Jack Ireland’s primary occupation was clearing land for sheep and cattle grazing, he was most known for his moonshine and disregard for the law, as apparently he spent many a night in the county jail. When my father, and grandfather before him, were growing up on the property, only the tattered remnants of Jack’s house remained. The old decrepit structure only strengthened the notion that the “cabin” was haunted, and thus was born the legend of Jack’s Cabin!
