2003 Mauritson Cabernet Sauvignon
You know the saying, “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it”? Well that’s the approach we took with our 2003 Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon. We used the same vineyard sources as the 2002 Cabernet; all we did was change the percentages. The previous vintage had incredible structure (maybe a little too much, early on). With the 2003, we used a little more Merlot in the blend; 15% to be exact. The results were exactly what we had hoped for: a wine with tannin to support it for years to come, but enough fruit so that it is enjoyable now upon release. That’s what we call having your cake and eating it too!
The wine is definitely a sum of its parts. Each of the vineyards brings a unique characteristic to the blend. In the front palate and the nose, it is all Dry Creek Cabernet: bright fruit, hints of mineral and supple tannins. The mid-palate is where the Montecillo (Vineyard) shows its stuff: incredible structure with complex flavors of eucalyptus and earth. Last, but certainly not least, the Alexander Valley Cabernet leaves you feeling like you’ve just driven through dusty field with the windows down. The chalky, dusty tannins coat your mouth and create the perfect finish to this wine.
