2016 Rockpile "Buck Pasture"
69% Cabernet Sauvignon 23% Cabernet Franc 8% Malbec
22 months in oak barrels 100% French
Our 2016 Buck Pasture has delicate notes of crushed graphite, spicy cigar box, sweet dried sage and baker’s chocolate. The entry is silky and texture fine grained. Fragrant black tea leaf, savory herb, and black current complement the fresh and firm finish. The 2016 vintage of Buck Pasture embodies a wine with a true sense of harmony and terroir. Enjoy this wine over the next two to twelve years.
The 2016 growing season started off with steady rainfall, unlike the previous four years of drought. The region experienced plenty of heat but the absence of any extreme spikes. Due to its location and the presence of Lake Sonoma, it is very rare to see fog on Rockpile. However, while walking the vineyards in August, it was common to be blanketed in fog. As a result, veraison extended from its average length of 8-10 days to north of 14+ days. We responded by having to do two veraison drops (removing lagging fruit) so that only the most synchronized clusters were left to ripen. It continues to amaze me how one snapshot in the annual growing cycle of winegrapes can become its defining moment.
