2017 Rockpile "Independence"
25% Tinto Cao, 25% Tinta Madeira, 25% Touriga Nacional, 25% Sousão
The single-acre block where this varieties are planted is called Independence, and our 2017 “Independence” Red Wine has an incredibly seductive nose of vanilla bean pod and sweet balsamic-glazed black figs intermingled with pound cake crumbs. Dried apricot and shaved nutmeg seed dominate the sultry, savory entry. The finish shows voluptuous restraint: Firm tannins lie just beneath the surface, accented beautifully with balanced acidity. While this wine is easy to appreciate now, it will benefit from a year or two in the cellar and age gracefully for the next 10-15 years.
Some of my fondest family memories revolve around the dinner table: great food, great wine and, of course, finishing off the evening with a great bottle of Port. When we started planting our Rockpile vineyards in 1999, we chose four of the primary varietals used in the production of Port and we’ve made every effort to craft this wine as true to a vintage Port as possible.
