2018 Rockpile "Buck Pasture" Red Wine
57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 10% Malbec, 3% Cabernet Franc
22 months in oak barrels 100% French
This primal and powerful Buck Pasture has aromas of cassis, dried underbrush, tobacco leaf and star anise. The wine is linear and fresh on the entry with an enticing mid-palate lift of sweet red fruit. The tannins are dense and muscular, which is to be expected of a young Bordeaux blend. The balance and lingering finish reveal a wine that will yield great rewards with patient aging. Enjoy over the next 2 to 12 years.
Often there is so much focus on the weather that leads up to the ripening stage that little focus is given to the last 6+ weeks. This period can either extend the window of the harvest period, with foggy mornings and low daily highs, or quickly hasten it, with hot days and warm nights. In 2018, after the onset of veraison, Mother Nature delivered such fair weather that we had the pleasure of being able to delay pick decisions by 4-7 days in the absence of elevated sugar levels, to encourage the nuances of aromas and flavors. The result is a very classic expression of the Bordeaux varietals grown at Rockpile.
