Tasting Notes
Our Rockpile Touriga is the latest release in our unique
Unicorn series. It has a gorgeous intensity with a deep
magenta hue and a perfumy nose of fresh summer
blackberry, toasted brioche, violets and blackcurrants,
along with a dusting of anise shavings. Its precise entry of
dark fruits, dried lavender and olive tapenade continues
into the juicy firm tannins and an extended and satisfying
finish.
Winemaker Notes
Carved out of the mountainside at our Rockpile Ridge
Vineyard lies a one-acre plateau planted in equal parts to
four classic Portuguese varietals: Tinto Cao, Tinta
Madeira, Touriga and Sousao. These grapes are coharvested and co-fermented and used for our wonderful
Port-style dessert wine, Rockpile Independence. In 2021,
however, the phenomenal growing season and nearly
perfect ripening conditions produced such incredible
intensity and detail in the Touriga that we decided to
make a non-fortified red wine from this varietal alone. As
proven in Portugal’s Duoro Valley, these native varietals
historically destined for Port are now making themselves
known as equally delicious full-bodied, age-worthy still
wines.
