Tasting Notes
Recognizing the limited water in the soil heading into the start of the 2022 growing season, we gave meticulous attention to irrigation practices so that resources would still be available long into the season. Having water to irrigate the vines during their last big push allowed us to slow the progression of ripening, resulting in Pinot Noirs that maintained integrity, freshness and balance. Initially shy on the nose, with aeration this beautiful Pinot Noir wine reveals intricately woven aromas of young lilac blossom, Santa Rosa plum flesh and exotic East Asian spices. On the entry, fresh ripe pomegranate and Rainer cherry dominate. These red fruits are complemented by a mid-palate sweetness of sweet forest floor, black tea leaf and hints of sassafras. Beautifully structured, this Pinot Noir will drink beautifully over the next 5-8 years. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Winemaker Notes
β€œIt all started on a trip to Burgundy in December of 2005. Chef Charlie Palmer and I were traveling with some friends to the Hospice du Beaune, one of the most famous wine auctions in the world. The now infamous 2005 vintage had just been put into barrels, and we were fortunate enough to taste what can only be described as perfection in a glass. Inspired, Charlie decided that he wanted to make Pinot Noir. Though we had just finished planting a beautiful vineyard for Charlie on his estate property, the fruit would not be ready for at least 3 more years. It was time to call in some favors. After much begging, we were able to get our hand on some of the greatest Pinot Noir growing in Russian River Valley, Charlie Clay was born.” – Clay Mauritson
