Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
This resulting wine is beautifully complex and perfumy, with
aromas of blackberry compote, violet candy, cured meats, red
peppercorn, lavender blossom, fresh blueberry and toasted pecan.
Firm and voluptuous tannins, a hallmark of Rockpile, provide
further reward. This gorgeous blend would benefit from at least
12+ months of bottle age and will be best enjoyed over the next 7+
years.
Vineyard Notes
Our family’s Rockpile Ridge Vineyard is located at nearly 1,200
feet in elevation. The Madrone Spring block lies within and is
composed of three distinct varietals: Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and
Syrah. This site is the coolest microclimate in Rockpile, due to the
northwest orientation, and it produces wines of great vitality and
distinction.
Production Notes
The small production of our 2022 Rockpile Madrone Spring was
aged in three special vessels called puncheons. These are largeformat
French oak barrels that are double the size of standard
barrels. We aged nearly all our 2022 Rockpile Zinfandel-based
wines in puncheons to manage the new oak influence and preserve
the freshness and detail of the fruit layers.
Winemaker Notes
Our intention with the Madrone Spring release is to create a blend
that exemplifies this unique area of our original homesteaded
property and showcases the extraordinary affinity and alchemy of
Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Syrah. And though this wine was
originally dominated by Zinfandel and complemented with Petite
Sirah and Syrah, that has varied by release. Regardless of the
varietal breakdown, our goal is always to make the best blend that
expresses the Madrone Spring Vineyard in a specific vintage.
